The First 9/11: Chile (and other U.S. involvements)

On the anniversary of the World Trade Center — and attempted Pentagon — attacks, it is worth remembering and having a moment of silence for the “first 9/11” that occurred in Chile on 9/11/73, when the democratically elected President, Salvador Allende, was overthrown in a U.S.-sponsored coup d’état. Augusto Pinochet became the leader of a brutal military dictatorship that ruled until 1990.

This is just one of many U.S. interventions in other countries, in many cases involving the installation or support of dictatorships over democracy. Amy Goodman, Jeremy Scahill, & Noam Chomsky discuss topics related to Scahill’s book, “Dirty Wars: The World is a Battlefield” on this episode of Democracy Now.
