Definition & Scope

“The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings” (Masanobu Fukuoka, The One-Straw Revolution). However, because “we are nature, working” (Penny Livingston Stark), a thriving agriculture and planet is the same thing as a thriving us — we are one planet thriving.

The articles here integrate science, contemplative spirituality (mindfulness), permaculture (“design science as an Earth repair vehicle”, Geoff Lawton, 2014), mental and physical health, community, and environmental issues.

But, we should also remember Wendell Berry’s admonition (1989) that, “The question which must be addressed…is not how to care for the planet, but how to care for each of the planet’s millions of human and natural neighborhoods…”
